Dogs & Children Part 4: 6 ways to help a child with a fear of dogs

I have met a few children that love the IDEA of a dog or puppy, but when they meet the reality is quite different, ranging from shying away and hiding behind a parent, to downright screaming and running away. Even from me, a cute spangle! So we thought we would put together a few pointers to help a child get over their fear, and learn to (safely) enjoy dogs.

Black & White Sunday: Best buddies

This is my bestie, Kali the Cavachon! I have known her since I was 13 weeks old - we love play fighting. But Hooman thinks we look and sound like little canine hooligans when we do!  Kali spent the day with us today while her Hooman was at a family event - we had super fun!

Dogs & Children Part 2: Teaching children to interact with dogs

We all remember the excitement that most of us will have had as children when we got to play with a puppy or dog, or even better, our parents brought one home!   However, a childs boisterous behaviour can be scary or intimidating for a dog, particularly one who has not had a lot of dealings with children.

It is important to teach children the appropriate manner in how to interact with dogs - much as we would not tolerate them shouting in our face, pulling our hair, picking up our food or climbing all over us, we have to teach children that that same behaviour is not appropriate towards dogs.  We should instead be advocating that all animals should be treated with kindness and respect.

Dogs & Children Part 1: Not reading the signs

Hooman is very passionate about training children to approach and treat dogs correctly, and recently has started to get somewhat distressed by a lot of "cute" pictures on social media of children draped across dogs, when clearly the dog is not comfortable with the situation.  It breaks her heart that these dogs are not being "read" correctly and this is how bites happen, a large number of times being completely the fault of the Hoomans.

Product Review: Salt Dog Studios fabric collar

Hooman went weak at the knees recently when she (me) received a collar to review from Salt Dog Studios. I have more collars than is respektababble for a dog - seriously, I have a "working wardrobe" of about 15.  I will tell you all about it in a future post.

  • Widget always brings me a toy, even if she only saw me 2 minutes earlier.
  • After I've come in from work, walked her, fed her and done whatever else, as soon as I finally sit down on the sofa Orla jumps up into my lap and just looks me in straight in the face for about a minute while I rub her ears. Then she will settle down in her spot and stretch out
  • Misty always come back upstairs after my husband has got up to check I am making a move to get out of bed. If not she lies on me, licks me all over my face then sits on my head. At this point I give in and get up lol
  • Mines taken to taking her owl with her on walks and owlie has to go or there's trouble
  • Because she thinks she's a hooman! She sleeps like a hooman! Flat on her back
  • Sitting at the bottom of the stairs every morning squeaking away ready to greet with teddy in mouth & tail wagging 100 mph
  • I have to say howling in his sleep can't get a photie now but my breeder got be of him doing it at 4 weeks old
  • Hannelore & Rudy like to do "roll over dogs" on their backs
  • Millie's cutest habit is sitting like a meerkat!
  • My cocker Parker's cutest habit is him scratching his blanket into a ball to get it just the way he wants it to sleep on it.
  • Jamie the cocker's cutest habit is sitting nicely when we open the fridge in case a carrot appears for him. Elvis the bunny's cutest habit is throwing himself down on the floor and rolling around before going to sleep
  • Rescue Molly has too many! If I'm sitting on the grass outside in the sun on our cold Winter mornings, she will come & jump arms around my neck & full body hug me, then fall in my lap roll on her back, & smile & laugh.
  • Willy only has 3 1/2 legs but so sweet when he runs
  • Kali cutest habit is sliding down the sand dunes on her belly. I am going to video it next time. She gets to the bottom looks at me - says in doggy speak that was fun and runs up to do it again

Product Review: Gor Pets Highland Bed

Last in the latest batch of goodies sent for review from Gor Pets is this Highland bed.

In their words...
The new Highland Collection includes this super sturdy bed made from warm soft sherpa fabric. The hight sided high density foam protects from drafts and retains the heat, making this the perfect companion this season. The bed is fully machine washable and the base is removable for easy washing.

Now Hooman didn't know what was being sent, and when she opened the parcel, she thought it was hoomungus!  It isn't really, but I am a little spangle, and it is a lot bigger than my other beds. This particular one is the 32".

However, this has now become a permanent fixture in the sitting room, as I have moved half my toys in, and like to curl up among them all for a snooze!

The bed is very well constructed - funky checked yet tough Sherpa fabric (this one is the Autumn Check pattern - there are three designs altogether), all machine washable with a removable base, and the best bit is that it has great sturdy sides that do not collapse!  The sides are nice and high too - will be great for keeping the drafts out when we head back towards winter.   I have another soft bed from a well known company, but the sides just do not hold their shape.  We like that this one does!

The bed comes in a wide range of sizes, from 20" to 36", and is available from a variety of stockists, including Amazon UK.

Black & White Sunday... and how I came to be

Now don't worry after looking at the title of the post, I am not about to tell you the canine birds and bees!  This is purely a post about how I came to be in Hoomans life.

Hooman waited a very long time to have me - 29 years in total!  She fell in love with a little golden spaniel called Lucy when she was just 7 years old, who belonged to a classmate.  Her parents later on decided to get a dog, but against all pleading and begging, they decided to get a male Bichon Frisé, called Tigger.  It just wasn't the same, and he didn't belong to her!

Hooman then spent 17 years living in North London - she loved it there, but living costs plus dog care was prohibitively expensive, and it was still a pipe dream to have the little golden girly she still dreamt about.

And then, rumours started at work. Whispers of "relocation", and "Buckinghamshire" started.  They were true.  Two years after the rumours started, a huge number of company employees were uprooted and moved to a brand new office.  Hooman commuted for a while, but after just a couple of months, she decided to just move herself here.  With "I need a house that allows a dog" being first on the agenda with local agents. Not easy, but she persevered, and finally found a little house with the woods and meadows nearby.

A couple of months after moving in, Hooman started the search, emailing 45 breeders from the Kennel Club on the off-chance they had, or knew about golden puppies.  She was firm - it had to be cocker, a bitch and red/gold.  She started getting a little despondent - some breeders told her they wouldn't consider her even though she had daycare arrangements in place, others told her she wanted a black, or a blue roan instead, even trotting out old myths about reds having temperament issues.

And then the email arrived, from one of the most famous kennels in the country. "My pregnant bitch is sat next to me as I type, and she is due next week.  Reds...."  She also said that Hooman would be second on the list for a girl, so there had to be at least two girls!   It was a long wait and them a week later, Hooman woke up to an email - 2 boys and 2 girls!

Three weeks later, Hooman made the long journey to meet me for the first time.  When she first saw us, she was speechless (that doesn't happen often!) and spent the next two hours just cuddling me and my sister.  She always was drawn to me, but waited till six weeks to see our personalities.  I was trying to climb her to nibble on her chin - it was love at first sight.   Hooman even came up with all our kennel names - I am Lochranza Lady of the Lake (Hooman thinks now it should have been "bog").  And Louise (the breeder) has been amazing ever since, with advice when needed, grooming lessons, and Hooman and her can talk and talk for HOURS!!

Eleven weeks after that first email (with a lot of shopping in between), she brought me home and we have been inseperable ever since!

I hope you have enjoyed reading about how Hooman and me came together - just goes to show that even the longest wait can be worth it...

Product Review: Gor Pets - Gor Flex Gizmo

Next up in the goodies that Gor Pets sent my Hooman to review, was the Gor Flex Gizmo.

A Spaniels Tail Gor Flex Gizmo dog toy

Now this is a funny looking thing - basically compromised of two halves, with a sealed squeaker in the middle, and a groove between the two halves where you can stuff treats.  In Gor Pets words:

The Gor Flex range is made using TPR (thermoplastic rubber) which offers a superb combination of rubber and plastic to give a very tough and flexible toy.
The signature Gizmo toy from Gor Pets has an encased squeaker which means even if the toy is pierced it still continues to squeak. It also has a groove around the toy to insert small treats. Gizmo squeaks and has treats, making this the ultimate dog toy. The Flex material ensures long lasting funtime for your dog.

I don't have a great history with these types of toys.  Kongs have not kept me hugely emertained - when I was a tiny pup, Hooman used to read about how wonderful Kongs were at keeping your puppy distracted, relaxed and entertained.  I just used to ignore them and howl like a banshee, heehee (luckily I grew out of that).  But I still prefer my soft cuddlies.

But this has a squeaky.  I luffs squeakies! So Hooman dutifully stuffed a few bits of a free sample of Lily's Kitchen kibble she had lying around, around the groovy groove bit.

A Spaniels Tail Gor Flex Gizmo dog toy

Now I didn't play with it for ages, but it was a new record for this type of toy and it kept me entertained for twenty minutes, before I got thoroughly exhausted by it all and had to have a snooze.  I was a little bemused by it at first, but got the hang of it when a few bits of kibble fell out.

This toy would be great for those doggies who like a really good chew - the squeaky will still work when pierced which is really clever, and it is made of good tuff stuff!  So if you are looking for a new toy to entertain your dog, this could be worth a try!
